Monitor light bar guide
A light bar sits on top of your monitor and lights your desk without lighting your screen. It solves one specific problem very well — here's how it works and what to look for when you buy one.
Why a light bar instead of a desk lamp
A normal desk lamp has two problems in front of a monitor: it takes desk space, and part of its light hits the screen, which creates reflections and washes out contrast. A light bar avoids both. It clamps onto the top edge of the monitor, so it uses zero desk space, and it uses asymmetric optics — the light is shaped to fall forward and down onto your desk and keyboard, not backward onto the screen.
The result is a well-lit work surface, a screen that keeps its contrast, and less brightness difference between the display and its surroundings. That last point is the real comfort win: your eyes strain most when they constantly adapt between a bright screen and a dark room.
The specs that actually matter

Price ranges, honestly
Budget (~20–40 €): gets you the core benefit — asymmetric desk light with basic dimming. Expect simpler build quality, sometimes fixed color temperature, and on-bar controls. Brands like Quntis and Xiaomi are common in this range.
Mid-range (~40–80 €): adds high CRI, full color-temperature range, better diffusers and often a wireless controller. For most desks this is the sweet spot.
Premium (~90–180 €): BenQ's ScreenBar line defined the category. You pay for ambient sensors, refined optics, curved-screen mounts and backlight halos. Worth it if you sit at the desk all day; overkill for occasional use.
Setup tips
- Center the bar on the monitor's top edge and angle the beam so the brightest area lands on your keyboard, not your wrists or the wall.
- Match the room: a light bar works best with some ambient light behind or beside the monitor. A bright desk in a pitch-black room recreates the contrast problem.
- Route the cable down the back of the monitor together with the display cables — one clip is enough to keep it invisible.
- Evenings: warm temperature, lower brightness. Your desk stays usable without keeping you wide awake.
- Webcam users: mount the webcam beside or below the bar and check for lens flare before your next call.
Do you actually need one?
If your desk faces a window and you work in daylight: probably not. If you work in the evening, in a dim room, or your screen sits against a dark wall — a light bar is one of the highest-impact, lowest-effort upgrades a desk setup can get. It's also one of the few desk accessories that changes how the workspace feels in photos and in person alike, which is why you see it in nearly every setup on our boards.
